Academic staff

International Development Studies (MSc)

The Master’s International Development Studies is organised by the Graduate School of Social Sciences of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Amsterdam.

The academic staff of this programme is actively involved in research; most of them at UvA's Amsterdam Institute of Social Science Research (AISSR); more specifically in the research group Governance for Inclusive Development (GID).

Courtney L. Vegelin

The Programme Director of the MSc in International Development Studies is Dr. Courtney L. Vegelin.

In addition to being programme director, Courtney Vegelin also lectures in International Development Studies (IDS) for the Master’s Programme and for the Bachelor Minor Programme IDS. Her academic background is in International Relations, in which she also taught for many years before joining the IDS programme. Her research interests include exploring the multi-scalar, multi-stakeholder, and relational contexts in which social inclusion and political agency is denied, how such phenomena can be interpreted through global agreements such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and how and why notions of transparency and accountability are making their way more firmly into global development discourse. Her main passion, however, is teaching, sharing new ideas and knowledge from within the field of International Development to students, engaging with students’ own knowledge and experience, and helping to build a global community in the classroom.

Prof Dennis Rodgers, Professor International Development

Dennis Rodgers

Dennis Rodgers is Professor of International Development Studies (IDS). His research focuses broadly on issues relating to the political economy of development, including in particular the dynamics of conflict and violence in cities in Latin America and South Asia (India). In this short piece he explains why he believes that the best teaching is always research-led and what is the great strength of IDS.
