2019 Dies Natalis

The UvA celebrates its 387th birthday

On Tuesday, 8 January 2018 the University of Amsterdam will celebrate its 387th birthday or Dies Natalis. All students and staff members are warmly invited to attend this special afternoon event.

The Dies celebration will take place on Tuesday, 8 January, from 15:00 to 17:00, in the Aula of the UvA (Singel 411, Amsterdam). It will be followed by a reception in the hall of the Maagdenhuis. Please fill in the form below if you wish to attend. The event will also be streamed live on the day.

Rector Karen Maex will open with a speech followed by the Dies Speech by Hilde Geurts,  professor of Clinical Neuropsychology at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Honorary doctorates

After the opening and Dies speeches the following honorary doctorates will be presented:

  • Canadian-American journalist and activist Naomi Klein will receive an honorary doctorate for her important contribution in focusing attention on global issues of social justice within academia and beyond. Her honorary supervisor is Ingo Venzke, professor of International Law and Social Justice.
  • Renowned composer Louis Andriessen will be honoured for his work as a composer and his contribution to music theory. The doctorate will be presented by honorary supervisors Julia Kursell, professor of Musicology, and Kati Röttger, professor of Theatre Studies.

The Dies Natalis celebration will conclude with a contribution by a student delegation.

Following the celebration, a reception will be held at the Maagdenhuis where you will also have the opportunity to congratulate the honorary doctors.
