UvA identifies 220 extra student rooms

8 June 2018

In its pursuit of a rapid solution to meet the need for additional accommodation for international students, the University of Amsterdam (UvA), in collaboration with Droompark recreation park and AM, has made agreements with Alvast, a vacant property manager, to provide additional temporary student rooms in Spaarnwoude and in the Bijlmerbajes complex.

A good opportunity

It is very difficult for students in Amsterdam to find affordable rooms. The situation is worse still for international students because they don’t have the option of living with their parents which Dutch students often have. For this group in particular, the new accommodation on offer is a good initial opportunity in the overheated Amsterdam housing market.

Spaarnwoude Droompark

Droompark recreation park in Spaarnwoude will provide accommodation for 100 students, with groups of four students sharing a chalet. The park has a variety of facilities, including a small convenience store, a restaurant and even an indoor swimming pool. Students can reach the centre of Amsterdam in 30 minutes using public transport or bicycles. Two Dutch residence assistants will help students to find their way round and contribute to a feeling of security and community spirit.

Bijlmerbajes

One of the towers of the Bijlmerbajes, a former prison complex, is set to be converted to provide 122 furnished student rooms. The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) is also installing the same number of rooms. They will be individual rooms with a communal shower area and kitchen. Alongside the standard management activities of the landlord, students will benefit from residence assistants at this site as well.

Time-limited offer

The additional rooms will be available from the first semester of academic year 2018-2019. This will prevent students from being disappointed in their search for a room. September will see the completion of temporary student rooms in Oudemanhuispoort as well, which will be let for a three-year period.

Both Droompark and Bijlmerbajes are available for a limited time only - during the first semester of the academic year 2018-2019. Students will then have to find alternative accommodation via Student Services. After one year in the Netherlands, international students must find their own way on the housing market.

Allocation

The rooms are being made available in addition to the standard range on offer. They are allocated by the UvA/AUAS Student Service.
