UvA Course Catalogue - Master's programme Urban and Regional Planning


The Master's programme in Urban and Regional Planning consists of the following elements:

  • Planning: a Theory of Praxis (6 ECTS)
  • Innovative international planning practices (6 ECTS)
  • Climate Proof Development of Cities and Strategic Planning (6 ECTS)
  • Rethinking Urban Transportation Management (6 ECTS)
  • Contemporary Approaches in Property-led Urban Planning (6 ECTS)
  • Planning research: empirical research methods and techniques (6 ECTS)
  • Master thesis Urban and Regional Planning (24 ECTS)


In the various Master's courses many topics are related to the lecturers' research. Examples include:

  • Comparative analysis of European metropolitan areas such as Copenhagen, Strasbourg and Vienna;
  • Institutional requirements for multiple land use;
  • Commercial gentrification
  • Strategic planning in the northern wing of the Randstad;
  • Transition paths to sustainable urban mobility, or;
  • Support for transport and land use strategy-making.


Students complete the Master's programme Urban and Regional Planning with a Master's thesis in which they apply their knowledge of relevant planning theories and empirical research methods. The topics should be related to the planning courses and topics offered by the programme.

Degree requirements

The MSc in Urban and Regional Planning  is awarded upon completion of 60 ECTS credits, including all required courses in the curriculum and a written Master's thesis, which is based on an independent research project, carried out within the master thesis project.


The whole programme is taught in English, although Dutch students have the right to take their exams in Dutch since this programme is Dutch accredited.
