Academic Integrity Lecture – 13 February

On Thursday 13 February from 17:00-18:00 there will be a lecture on academic integrity: what is regarded proper behaviour of students and (future) academics? Academic integrity or ethics has become more and more important and ranges from what is morally acceptable in research, to the more practical ‘how to avoid plagiarism?’ Academic integrity is important, and plagiarism and fraud can have serious consequences for your study at the GSSS. Therefore, particularly new students at the UvA are strongly recommended to attend the lecture that will be given by Prof. Mark Rutgers, Director of the Graduate School of Social Sciences. Registration is not necessary. The lecture will take place in room F2.01C of the Oudemanhuispoort.

Effective searching with the UvA Library

In the first month of the semester the GSSS organises library skills workshops in collaboration with the Information Specialists of the UvA library. We strongly recommend all students to participate.

The workshop covers the use of the very extended UvA library catalogue, efficient data collection management and the use of the digital library system in a mostly interactive character with exercises and group discussions. Topics discussed in the workshop include:

  • Information about the UvA-Library;
  • Evaluating sources;
  • Plagiarism;
  • Search skills and Refworks.

You can sign up for a workshop through online application. You can directly go to the application form or through the workshop announcement on the student website, then select your Master’s programme. You can also read student testimonials and web links to the course locations there.
