Following a peaceful demonstration last night, a group of protestors broke into the UvA’s Maagdenhuis building. The door was forced open and a member of security assaulted. The Executive Board has laid formal charges.

Members of the Executive Board went to the Maagdenhuis to talk to the protestors, who were asked to leave the building and return today (Thursday) for further talks. This request was refused. Later in the evening, Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan visited the Maagdenhuis to try and mediate between the Board and the protestors.

Louise Gunning, president of the Executive Board: ‘Last night’s debate was impassioned, but that is inherent to Amsterdam. But as the mayor also said in the Maagdenhuis, it is only truly Amsterdam if something positive emerges from such a debate. We will continue with talks today, also with students and staff who aren’t in the Maagdenhuis. The points that are raised will be fleshed out during the debate marathon. The results of this afternoon’s talks are possibly, as far as we are concerned, of a binding nature. I hope and expect that we will eventually be able to deal with the issues that are broadly supported.’
