Geert ten Dam, professor of Education at the UvA, has been appointed as the new president of the Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS). Karen Maex, currently dean of the science faculties of the UvA and Vrije Universteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), has been appointed as rector magnificus of the UvA and member of the UvA-AUAS Executive Board.
The Supervisory Boards appointed Ten Dam and Maex after they were unanimously put forward as candidates by the advisory appointments committees and following recommendations by the representative advisory bodies and the deans of the UvA and AUAS. According to the Supervisory Boards, both Ten Dam and Maex can count on broad support within the organisations. Both have extensive experience within teaching and research and will contribute towards the further strengthening of the UvA and AUAS.
Geert ten Dam: ‘The AUAS and UvA shaped me. I studied here and still work here with great pleasure. I want to devote myself to accessible and quality education in Amsterdam and to narrowing the gap between management, and staff and students. Together, we’re working on achieving quality education and research with a strong link to the outside world.’
Karen Maex: ‘Over the last few years I have gotten to know talented and passionate students and staff at both universities. This inspired me to work, in consultation with others, to ensure an environment where research and education can fully flourish and which radiates ambition. I am glad to be able to shape these objectives further as rector magnificus of the University of Amsterdam.’
The new Board members will take office on 1 June. Shortly after the May holiday break, an event will be organised with Ten Dam and Maex for the university and applied sciences communities.
Prof. G.T.M. (Geert) ten Dam (1958) has been professor of Education at the UvA since 1999. In addition, she holds the position of Crown-appointed member of the Dutch Social Economic Council (SER). Ten Dam was president of the Education Council of the Netherlands until the end of 2014. Prior to this, she was rector of the UvA’s university teacher-training programme and chair of its department of Child Development and Education. The president of the Executive Board is responsible for strategy, strategic HRM, communications, internal audit, external relations, international positioning and fundraising.
Prof. K.I.J (Karen) Maex (1959) was appointed dean of the UvA’s Faculty of Science and of VU Amsterdam’s Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences and Faculty of Sciences on 1 January 2014. She is also professor of Material Physics and Nanoelectronics at the UvA and VU Amsterdam. Prior to coming to Amsterdam, Maex was vice-rector of KU Leuven. She was also a member of the Governing Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The rector magnificus is responsible for education, research and internationalisation.
The new procedure came about after extensive consultations between the UvA’s Central Student Council (CSR) and Central Works Council (COR), the Central Representative Advisory Council (CMR) of the AUAS, the deans of the UvA and AUAS and the Supervisory Boards. The representative advisory bodies had the right of approval regarding the profile and delegated four candidates to the advisory appointments committees (two students and two staff members on behalf of the UvA-AUAS) and had the right of recommendation over the appointments. In addition to representatives from the representative advisory bodies, representatives of the deans of the UvA and AUAS and the Supervisory Boards also had a seat on the advisory appointments committees. The committees were tasked with putting forward candidates. These led to a unanimous endorsement of Ten Dam and Maex. In recent weeks, consultations were held with the representative advisory bodies and deans.
