The Minister of Education, Culture and Science has appointed Professor Edith Hooge as a member of the UvA Supervisory Board, effective 1 October 2017. The appointment is for a term of four years. Professor Gerard Mols has been appointed for a second term as a Supervisory Board member.
Edith Hooge was appointed on the recommendation of the UvA’s representative advisory bodies (COR and CSR) and ‘enjoys the special support of the representative bodies’, according to the Higher Education and Research Act (WHW). With this, Hooge takes over the position from Gerard Mols, who held it for four years.
Breanndán Ó Nualláin, on behalf of the COR and CSR: ‘Not only does Edith Hooge have extensive administrative experience in the higher education sector and knowledge of developments in teaching and research, she is also approachable. We have full confidence that she will properly execute her duties as a member of the Supervisory Board with special support. We would like to thank Gerard Mols for executing this role over the last four years.’
Edith Hooge (1967) obtained her PhD in Educational Sciences from the UvA. She is professor and director of GovernanceLAB at Tilburg University’s TIAS School for Business and Society, and holds the ‘Boards and Governance in Education’ chair. She conducts research on supervision, management and responsibility in the education and other non-profit sectors and has been involved in the development of and research into governance codes for over 15 years. Hooge is a member of the Supervisory Board of HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht and chair of the Governance Innovation and Advisory Committee for Healthcare (Governance Innovatie- en Adviescommissie Zorg). In addition, she forms part of the Law Review Committee.
Gerard Mols (1951) studied Law at Utrecht University (UU), where he also obtained his PhD in 1982. In the following years, he worked as an attorney in criminal cases in The Hague, Maastricht and Roermond, and as a lecturer in Criminal Law at Utrecht University and Maastricht University (UM). In 1986, Mols was appointed professor of Criminal Law at UM, where he became dean of the Faculty of Law in 1992. In 2004, he was appointed Rector Magnificus of Maastricht University, a post he held until September 2012. Mols is currently professor of Criminal Law and Law of Criminal Procedure at UM, and deputy justice at the Court of Den Bosch. He is also chair of the Supervisory Board of Zuyd University of Applied Sciences.
As from 1 October 2017, the Supervisory Board consists of Marise Voskens (chair), Rob Becker MBA and Prof. Pauline Meurs. The Supervisory Board independently assesses the overall governance of the university, appoints members of the Executive Board and advises the Board appropriately. Key planning documents such as the Strategic Plan, the budget, the annual financial report and the management and administration regulations, require the Supervisory Board’s approval.
The Supervisory Board is delighted with the appointment. ‘The appointment of Edith Hooge to the Board and the wide-ranging experience and knowledge of its respective members will greatly benefit supervision and decision-making’, says Supervisory Board Chair Marise Voskens.
