The Summer Programmes Office (SPO), part of the Graduate School of Social Sciences at the University of Amsterdam, is seeking the support of two interns from 1 February to Friday, 31 July 2020. Our office offers a variety of short-term programmes between the months of June and August for international students. 

  • Internship description 

    This position is initially for 24 hours per week during the planning period (from February until roughly mid-May), and then increases to 32 hours per week during the running of the programmes (roughly mid-May until end of internship). Depending on the time of year, such as in the summer, these hours may be spread throughout the week or weekends, depending on the needs of the Summer Programmes Office and the programmes we organize.

    This is an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the world of study abroad from a European perspective, and to immerse yourself in a thoroughly international academic environment. Working at the Summer Programmes Office can be a fast-paced and incredibly rewarding experience. We expect to host 30 programmes with around 500-600 students this summer. Students come from across the world and will be studying various subjects within the social and behavioural sciences.   

  • Internship responsibilities

    Responsibilities include:

    • Assisting the Programme Director, Programme Manager, and Programme Coordinators with the daily operational tasks surrounding programme management
    • Administrative tasks such as creating, maintaining and updating databases, assisting with the admissions process (including maintaining contact with applicants), marketing, scheduling and organizing appointments, bookings, and reservations, etc. 
    • Assisting students during the summer programmes and running programme-related errands
    • Accompanying groups of students on excursions both within the Netherlands and occasionally to Belgium (programme dependant)
    • Updating the digital learning environment (Canvas), and social media as required
    • Assisting faculty with day-to-day the running of their programme
    • Acting as a mentor for the students and ambassador for the Summer Programmes Office and the University of Amsterdam.
  • Application requirements

    Please ensure you match the following profile: 

    • While not mandatory, priority will be given to current University of Amsterdam students or those who have experience working or volunteering at the UvA.
    • Interest in study abroad, and innovative education broadly; study abroad experience preferred
    • Enjoy working with students and participants of all ages and nationalities
    • Capable of working independently as well as a member of a team. You must be a team-player as well as a self-starter.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Knowledge of Dutch is a plus.
    • Basic computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel and Outlook. Knowledge of using Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter for marketing purposes (new ideas are also always welcome).
    • Detail oriented, highly organized and efficient in administrative tasks
    • Level-headed, positive, flexible, able to improvise
  • Benefits

    A housing stipend (€350) and a small stipend (€250) will be offered on a monthly basis. Lunch is provided on week days while programmes are running during the summer. We will also provide the intern with a museum card. You will also have the rare opportunity to be part of a dynamic and exciting educational environment and team within the University of Amsterdam. Please note that you are responsible for your own health insurance while in the Netherlands and may be required to show proof of insurance.
